Start with the finish
For a sharply pressed collar or a deliberate crease, an iron offers a flat pressing surface. A steamer is an option for refreshing hanging garments when a crisp finish is not the goal. Always check the garment care label and the appliance instructions first.
Include setup in your comparison
Consider filling, heating, arranging the garment, refilling, and putting the appliance away. Tank capacity and the manufacturer’s stated heat-up time are useful comparison points, but neither proves which tool will be faster in your routine.
Choose for your available space
An iron needs an appropriate stable pressing surface; a steamer needs a safe place to hang the garment. Never steam clothing while wearing it. If you already have an iron that works for your clothes, a second appliance may add more storage than convenience.
